Peking Opera

Duration2:
1.25 Hours
Although various forms of drama and music existed thousands of years ago, theatre that included music and dance can be traced back to the Song and Yuan Dynasties of the late 13th century. The operatic form became highly developed during the early Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) in the area around Suzhou. This form included many elements of local and provincial theatrical styles and was superseded by what we now call Beijing opera. Beijing opera includes music, song and dance, pantomime and acrobatics. The forms of all of these Chinese arts are different from their Western counterparts, and similarly, Beijing opera is different from any opera, drama, singing, dance, mime, or acrobatics that Western visitors are familiar with.
