On Your Own Suggestions
- Visit Fort Adams across Newport Harbor, the largest coastal fortification in the United States. Fort Adams housed generations of soldiers from 1824-1950. See where the soldiers lived, enter the casemates, explore the tunnel system, and climb the bastions for breathtaking views. There are often special events here, like military reenactments, music festivals, and classic car shows.
- Take the Cliff Walk from First Beach to Bailey’s Beach, a lovely 3.5-mile walking tour that rims the southern edge of the city. You’ll get glimpses of the many mansions that define Newport as well as outstanding views of the harbor. The walk also takes you through the historic district and provides easy access to Bellevue Avenue, where you can hop aboard a city trolley if you like.
- Whether you play tennis or not, you’re sure to enjoy a stop at the Tennis Hall of Fame. You’ll find exhibits on the history of tennis as well as a museum shop stocked with souvenirs and tennis-related items. Thirteen grass courts, known to be the oldest continuously used such courts in the country, are available for public use. Advance reservations are necessary. This engaging destination is housed in the old Newport Casino, one time playground for Newport’s rich and famous during the 19th century.
