On Your Own Suggestions

  • Visit the First African Baptist Church, rebuilt by slaves and the first building in America to be owned by African slaves. The upstairs balcony contains original pews made by the slaves, and the church museum contains archives and memorabilia that date back to the 18th century.

  • Enjoy a Southern meal served family style at Mrs. Wilkes’ Dining Room. Originally a boardinghouse serving home-style dinners to borders, Mrs. Wilkes continues to thrive as a restaurant. Tabletops are crowded with platters of fried chicken and cornbread dressing, sweet potato soufflé, black-eyed peas, okra gumbo, corn muffins, and biscuits. The menu changes daily. Credit cards are not accepted.

  • Visit Parker’s, a small grocery store on Drayton Street behind the Savannah Theatre. This building was once a gas station and has been converted into a unique market offering a good selection of wines, gift items, specialty and gourmet foods, and other necessities.
