Founded by Vasily III in 1524 and recently proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Novodevichy Convent is the most important center of Orthodoxy. Vasily's son Ivan the Terrible and later tsars contributed to its growth and protection, and it has played an important role in Russian history since it was founded. It is an outstanding example of Moscow baroque architecture of the 17th century. See the tombs of distinguished Russian citizens who are buried in its cemetery, which include Nikita Khrushchev, Boris Yeltsin, and Raisa Gorbachev.

Visit the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, the tallest Eastern Orthodox Church in the world, on the banks of the Moskva River. After the Napoleonic invasion, Tsar Alexander I declared his intention to build the cathedral on December 25, 1812. It was a symbol of gratitude for Divine Providence in saving the Russian people and as a memorial to their bravery. The Cathedral was consecrated in 1883; it was richly decorated with marble, granite, and precious stones. In 1931, it was demolished to make room for the Palace of Soviets but due to lack of funding, this never materialized. With financial contributions from the people, the Russian Orthodox Church recently rebuilt the cathedral as a faithful replica of the original. It was consecrated in 2001.
