Huatajata is located at an altitude of almost 13,000 ft. on the shores of Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. Its population of only 3,700 is comprised mostly of people from Amerindian descent—predominately Quechuas, Aymaras, Chiquitano, and Guarani. Despite some tourism, the population maintains life the way they have for centuries. Men go fishing in the mornings and return with their catch, while woman tend to the village. An interesting attraction is the Andean Eco Village at the Inca Utama Hotel, recreating a historic Andean village. Here, learn about the natural healing powers of herbs and plants, and have a blessing from a local healer.
Established in 1548, La Paz is the largest city in Bolivia and its legislative capital—though not its legal one. The highest national capital in the world—located roughly 10,000 ft. above sea level at its lowest point and 13,000 ft. above sea level at its highest point—it is surrounded by snowy peaks and dominated by the majestic Illimani. A popular attraction is the Mercado de las Brujas, the Witches Market, where herbs, charms, folk remedies, and other interesting items—including llama fetuses—are sold for rituals and offerings to the spirits. Going to a peña, or music club, to listen to folk music is a great way to relax and participate in Andean culture.
