The sacred Cenote is a large sinkhole measuring 198 feet (60 meters) in diameter, and treasures discovered here include rings, necklaces, gold and jade objects, pottery, and bones of humans sacrificed to the Mayan rain god Chaac. Uxmal is one of the best-restored and maintained ruins in the Yucatan. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the ruins reveal the social and economic makeup of the Mayan society and are an example of the late Mayan art and architecture. Uxmal flourished from 600-900 AD, and at its peak, it was home to roughly 25,000 Mayans. It was eventually abandoned by its inhabitants and later discovered during the conquest by the Spanish, who gave the structures their current names. Some of the ruins include the oval-shaped Magician's Pyramid, the Nun's Quadrangle with its magnificent friezes depicting the Mayan rain god, the magnificent Palace of the Governor, and the impressive Great Pyramid.
