One of the world's largest deserts, southern Mongolia's mystical Gobi is surrounded by stunning mountain scenery and the Gobi Glacier. While the desert is home to extreme temperatures (in winter, it can drop to 40-below zero, while summer heat can soar to 122 degrees), it still manages to support more than 300 varieties of plant and animal life, including the Snow Leopard and Bactrian Camel. The Gobi is also where the first fossilized dinosaur egg was found, and the Cemetery of Dinosaurs is a popular area attraction. Other fascinating activities are camel tours and visits to a camel breeders camp to learn about the nomadic lifestyle and culture.
Capital of Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar is a pulsating hub of commerce, entertainment, culture, and nightlife. Located on the banks of the Tuul River and surrounded by four sacred mountains, the city's noteworthy attractions include Sukhbaatar Square; Zaisan Hill with its sweeping views of the city; Bogd Khan Palace; the National and Natural History Museums with rich collections covering the area's history, people, flora, fauna, and dinosaur fossils excavated from the Gobi Desert; and Gandan Monastery, the most important Buddhist monastery in Mongolia.
