Dating back over 2,000 years and once thought to be the legendary valley of Shangri-La, Kathmandu is the largest city and capital of Nepal. Home to many ancient monuments, cultural attractions, and architectural wonders, there is much to experience here. Highlights include Hanuman Dhoka, a complex of palaces, courtyards, and temples built between the 12th and 18th centuries; the Temple of Kumari, residence of the Living Goddess and said to be crafted from the wood of a single tree; Swayambhunath Stupa, a glorious hilltop Buddhist temple where large tribes of monkeys congregate; and the 4th- century Changu Narayan Temple, the oldest temple in the Kathmandu Valley.
Nestled at the foot of the towering Himalayas, Royal Chitwan National Park is Nepal's most famous wildlife reserve and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, over 300 square miles of forest, grasslands, and marshes protect some of the world's most endangered species, including the Great One-Horned Rhinoceros and the Bengal Tiger. A popular way to view area wildlife is from atop an elephant, where safaris frequently encounter leopard, jackal, Indian wild dog, sloth bear, Bengal fox, mongoose, badger, marten, hyena, otter, King Cobra, python, tortoise, and over 500 species of birds.
