Located on the banks of the Zambezi (Africa's fourth-longest river), Lower Zambezi National Park was the private game reserve of Zambia's president until 1983 when it became a national park. From the riverbanks and floodplains, the dramatic scenery changes from open plains dotted with baobab and acacia trees to dense forest. This remote preserve is ideal for close encounters with large herds of elephant, as well as wildlife viewing that includes lion, leopard, zebra, baboon, African wild dog, aardvark, impala, warthog, hyena, crocodile, hippo, many bird species, and over 75 species of fish.
One of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in the world, South Luangwa National Park is a remote safari location in eastern Zambia. With its stunning scenery, 60 different animal species, and over 400 different bird species, the park is known for its walking safaris that show off large populations of Thornicroft's giraffe (unique to the Luangwa Valley), elephant, buffalo, hippo, crocodile, baboon, zebra, 14 different species of antelope, hyena, leopard, lion, jackal, storks, pelicans, herons, eagles, and buzzards.
