Catherine Palace and Park
Beginning in the mid-18th century, this magnificent baroque-style palace was the center of court life. Here, balls and masquerades were held, and important affairs of state were carried out. The Palace contains 57 halls and a number of outbuildings. The grandiose Alexander Park was built by order of Catherine II, and it occupies an area of approximately 500 acres.
Menshikov Palace
The ochre-painted baroque Menshikovsky Dvorets, with its beautifully carved pilasters, is one of the earliest stone buildings in St. Petersburg. Designed by Giovanni Fontana and Gottfried Schadel, the palace was constructed by 1720 for Prince Menshikov, who was not only the leading advisor and comrade-in-arms, but also a true and devoted friend of Peter the Great. At present, Menshikovsky Palace houses exhibitions on 18th-century Russian culture, which successfully evoke the spirit of the age and reveal the extent to which Peter the Great’s court was influenced by Western tastes.
Alexander Nevsky Abbey
The Holy Trinity Alexander Nevsky Laura is one of the first monasteries of St. Petersburg. For some centuries, it was the main Russian abbey patronized by sovereigns, and the cemetery was the family vault of Russian sovereigns, grand generals, and politicians. Through the centuries, the Laura has collected numerous manuscripts, relics, crosses, and icons. Today it functions as a monastery and one of the most important Russian museums.
