Day-By-Day 2017

DAY
1
Arrive in Lima, Peru

Arrive in Lima, where you will be met by your Local Host.

DAY
2
Lima

Your included city TOUR focuses on Lima’s rich colonial history as well as the modern city. Lima was the bastion of Spanish South America from its founding in 1535 until the independence of the South American republics in the early 19th century. See the Cathedral, where the remains of Francisco Pizarro are sealed in a wooden coffin and San Francisco MONASTERY with its eerie burial crypts.

DAY
3
Lima–Paracas. Nazca Lines

Enjoy a scenic drive south along the Pan-American Highway to Pisco, the wine capital of Peru. Have your camera handy today as you board your aircraft for a FLIGHT over the Nazca plains, which can only be appreciated by air. Your pilot will point out the mysterious markings known as the Nazca Lines, a series of drawings of animals and geometric figures etched into the parched soil—some up to 1,000 feet long! Theories vary, but the most accepted belongs to German mathematician Maria Reiche, who dubbed the land the “astronomical calendar” of the ancient Peruvians.

DAY
4
Paracas–Ballestas Islands–Lima

Head north to the Bay of Paracas. CRUISE out to the Ballestas Islands, which are inhabited by a wide variety of sea mammals and exotic birds, including boobies, sea lions, and Humboldt penguins. The huge Candelabro, an unexplained candelabra-shaped etching on the Paracas cliffside, can also be seen as you cruise back to shore. Later, return to Lima.

DAY
5
Lima–Puerto Maldonado

Fly to Puerto Maldonado, capital of Madre de Dios and the entry to Peru’s Amazon Jungle. Embark on a MOTORBOAT for a journey up the Tambopata River to view turtles, caimans, monkeys, and river birdlife such as capped herons, black skimmers, and kingfishers. Arrive at your unique Amazon Jungle Lodge within the Ese-Eja native Indian community. After settling in, participate in a night WALK with your expert Naturalist to observe nocturnal wildlife.

DAY
6
Puerto Maldonado

A BOAT TRIP and walk bring you to Tres Chimbadas Oxbow Lake to search by CANOE for resident giant river otters, the largest and most endangered of the otter species. Next, take a walk to the CANOPY TOWER to observe the forest and river and its inhabitants. This afternoon, visit a local FARM to meet local farmers and learn about the Amazon’s crops. Your guide will also teach you the medicinal uses of the area’s endemic plants.

DAY
7
Puerto Maldonado

For more insight into jungle life, visit the PARROT CLAY LICK and watch parrots and macaws perch to eat clay. Also visit a Brazil nut FARM & CAMP and learn how this nut is sustainably harvested and prepared for consumption. Later, visit a MAMMAL CLAY LICK, where peccary and other large mammals can often be found.

DAY
8
Puerto Maldonado–Cusco

Fly to Cusco high in the Andes. Your guided TOUR of Cusco visits the Plaza de Armas and its CATHEDRAL and the Santo Domingo MONASTERY, previously the Koricancha Temple, one of the most important temples devoted to worship of the sun. It is said it was covered in gold leaf and filled with golden representations of nature.

DAY
9
Cusco–Sacred Valley

Take a short drive into the Urubamba Valley, the Sacred Valley of the Incas, to AWANAKANCHA, where you will learn about the importance of the alpaca (llama) for Inca cultures as well as the ancient weaving techniques still in use today. Continue to the market town of PISAC. Handmade rugs, alpaca sweaters, and jewelry can be bought here at bargain prices. At the other end of the valley visit OLLANTAYTAMBO. Here, some of the finest examples of Inca masonry can be seen.

DAY
10
Sacred Valley–Machu Picchu

Board a TRAIN bound for MACHU PICCHU and cut a path through the Sacred Valley to this “Lost City of the Incas,” discovered by American explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911. On a guided TOUR, explore this intact fortress with its temple remains, holy houses, and mile-long aqueduct. For hikers, a brisk one-hour walk leads to the Sun Gate, the ancient entrance used by the Incas.

DAY
11
Machu Picchu–Sacred Valley–Cusco

A morning at leisure in MACHU PICCHU allows you to wake up early to see the sunrise over Machu Picchu. Return to Cusco, where your Local Host will recommend options for your free time. Perhaps visit the Inca Museum or wander through the artisan district of San Blas.

DAY
12
Cusco–Juliaca–Lake Titicaca (Puno)

Later, fly to Juliaca, where you will be transferred to Puno on the shores of Lake Titicaca.

DAY
13
Puno. Excursion to Lake Titicaca

Today, enjoy a full-day sailing on LAKE TITICACA and take a motorboat to some of the lake’s more unique islands. Start with TAQUILE, once part of the Inca Empire and one of the last areas of Peru to be conquered by Spain in the 16th century. The Spanish banned traditional dress on the island, which is why the Spanish peasant dress can still be found today. Next, travel to the fascinating UROS ISLANDS, home to the Uros Indians who were forced to live on the lake as the Incas pushed farther into their territory. These islands are completely made from reeds, which are continually added to as they disintegrate to the bottom of the lake.

DAY
14
Puno–Sillustani–Juliaca–Lima

Depart for Juliaca this morning, visiting the ruins of SILLUSTANI en route. At this pre-Incan burial ground, see where the ancient Aymaras buried their high priests in chullpas, above-ground cylinder-shaped tombs dating back to the 1400s. Your evening in Lima is at leisure.

DAY
15
Lima-Quito

Depart Lima this morning and fly to Quito, Ecuador, where you will be met by your Local Host. Your evening is at leisure.

DAY
16
Quito

Your private city TOUR showcases the rich legacy left by the Incas and, later, the Spaniards. See Independence Square, dominated by its formidable Cathedral, San Francisco Plaza Church, and the Basilica with its marvelous stained-glass windows.

DAY
17
Quito–Baltra (Embarkation)–Galápagos Cruising: Santa Cruz Island

Fly to Baltra in the Galápagos. Upon arrival, transfer to Santa Cruz Island, where you will embark the Santa Cruz II and enjoy five days of cruising among various Galápagos Islands. Visit Las Bachas on SANTA CRUZ ISLAND, where abandoned WWII military barges can be found. Today, it is an important nesting area for the East Pacific Green Sea Turtle. You will also see brackish lagoons just steps away from the sea and the white-sand beach, a feeding ground for various wading birds—from stilts to flamingos. This evening, a lecture led by your onboard Naturalist will prepare you for tomorrow’s adventure.

DAY
18
Cruising: Santiago Island

After breakfast, join your Naturalist for a short panga ride to Espumilla beach on SANTIAGO ISLAND. In the nearby mangrove forest, watch where you step, as this is common nesting area for sea turtles. Also keep an eye out for Galápagos finches, marine iguanas, and sea lions, as well as flamingos and pintail ducks in the nearby lagoons. This afternoon, land at Puerto Egas, known for its black-sand beach and landscape of tuff-stone layers and lava flows. This is a great opportunity to see land and marine birds as well as a colony of fur sea lions and marine iguanas. You have the chance to snorkel or swim from the beach, or ride on the glass-bottom boat.

DAY
19
Cruising: Rábida & Bartolomé Islands

Disembark at RÁBIDA ISLAND on a red-colored beach, formed from the unusually high content of iron in the volcanic material. Here, your Naturalist points out large colonies of sea lions, marine iguanas, mockingbirds, yellow warblers, and several species of Darwin’s finches. This is a wonderful place to snorkel from the beach, due to the unique combination of underwater species and submarine landscapes. At BARTOLOMÉ ISLAND, hike to the summit for a stunning view of two beautiful bays and fascinating formations of lava flows and spatter cones, including iconic Pinnacle Rock. You will also have the chance to snorkel and possibly see Galápagos penguins in tropical waters and even some sharks!

DAY
20
Cruising: Genovesa Island

Upon arrival at GENOVESA ISLAND, your visit to Prince Philip’s Steps begins with a scenic panga ride along the cliffs to see the large number of shore and seabirds nesting in the cliffs’ ledges. Disembark at the base of Prince Philip’s Steps and climb up the stairs to a trail where birdlife abounds. A walk with your Naturalist reveals large colonies of masked boobies, blue-footed boobies, frigatebirds, storm petrels, and even short-eared owls. In the afternoon, disembark at Darwin Bay to observe thousands of birds—mainly, frigatebirds, red-footed and masked boobies, gulls, herons, finches, and mockingbirds. Return to the beach for swimming and snorkeling in this beautiful natural harbor.

DAY
21
Cruising: San Cristobal Island (Disembarkation)–Guayaquil

After breakfast, depart for Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, where Charles Darwin first set foot in the Galápagos back in 1835. This island is home to seabirds like blue-footed boobies, Nazca boobies, herons, frigatebirds, and various shore birds. Also watch for the Chatham mockingbird and Chatham lava lizard—both species are endemic to this island and seen nowhere else in the Galápagos. Then, fly to Guayaquil on Ecuador’s Pacific coast and transfer to the hotel for your final night in Ecuador.

DAY
22
Guayaquil

Your vacation ends with breakfast this morning.

Pedro de Osma Museum

This museum, located in Barranco, has one of the best painting collections in Peru with pieces dating back to the 16th century. The paintings from well-known artists are on linen cloth, metal, wood, glass and leather. Antique pieces of furniture, silver, sculptures and textiles are also part of the collection. The base for the Museum Pedro de Osma came from the personal collection formed by Don Pedro de Osma Gildemeister between 1936 and 1967. He had remarkable knowledge of the Peruvian art and gradually gathered various exquisite objects dating from the 16th to the 19th century. All the pieces were kept in the large family house in Barranco, arranged in a tight exhibition (style of the European palace museums in the 19th century).

The fortress was built in 1747 to protect the port from pirates and was the last Spanish bastion during the independence of Peru. Today, it houses an interesting military museum.

Pilgrims flocked here from far away to worship Pachacamac, who was believed to be the creator of the world and its creatures. The site includes palaces, plazas, and temples that have been painstakingly restored. The on-site museum has a collection of local relics.

Barranco

Every major city has its bohemian district—where all the artists and musicians hang out—and for Lima, this district is Barranco. The advantage of Barranco is that it combines all this with being a fashionable beach resort too. Originally a playground and place to spend the summer for the old aristocracy of Lima, the district is a cluster of houses, shops, and restaurants in and around a ravine near a cliff overlooking the beach. In Barranco, it is relatively easy to find a place to sip a coffee or a beer while enjoying a fine view over the ocean.

Islas Palomino

Sail to the islands of Callao. First see the yachts, warships, and merchant ships at anchor in Callao Bay. Then sail over "El Camotal" into the open sea, and observe sunken and stranded ships. Pass the Isle of San Lorenzo—with its long history going back to pre-Columbian times. There are fishing boats at work and many colonies of sea birds and Humboldt penguins. The farthest point on the trip is Palomino Island, home to a large number of seals and sea lions. In a wetsuit, you can swim among them, as they have no predators—it is an unforgettable and emotional moment. Then start your voyage back through impressively shaped islets and rocks.

Hacienda Mamacona

No more than 25 km to the south of Lima is a little-known hacienda where you can experience nature on the coast, ancestral customs, links with the Inca past, and the incomparable Peruvian paso horse. (Only on Tuesdays.)

Astrid Y Gaston

This warm and chic modern, colonial dining room is hidden discreetly on a busy side street leading to Parque Central in the Miraflores district. The restaurant has high, white-peaked ceilings and orange walls decorated with colorful modern art—the products of local art students. At the back is an open kitchen, where one of the owners, Gastón, can be seen cooking with his staff. The place is sophisticated but low-key—a description that could fit most of its clients, who all seem to be regulars. The menu might be called "criollo-Mediterranean" with a light Peruvian touch.

ChocoMuseum Workshop

Learn about the history of the Cacao and the chocolate, the Cacao’s tree and its small chocolate factory where the products are made. Enjoy a workshop in the Museum: Roasting of the cacao beans, cacao husk removal, grinding of the cacao nibs on a metate with a mano (the way the aztecs did) or with a batang (like Incas here in Peru), refining and conching of the cacao paste in a melangeur.

Meet a Local Host®

I was born in Quito and lived here most of my life. I always liked to travel and that is why after finishing high school, I decided to study tourism administration. While I was studying at the University, I started to work as a tour guide and found it very interesting. Being a tour guide allows me to meet people from many different places and it took me to incredible places. For a period of time I moved to Argentina where I taught Spanish and English but I missed my family and country, so I decided to come back to Ecuador. When I came back to Quito, I worked as a Key Account Executive for a tour operator, which was a great experience for my career, but after a time, I decided to be a tour guide again. I realized I enjoy being with people outside in the nature more than working in an office, and I am able to have more time for other activities I like, such as painting and working with the children of my church.

Meet Lorena, a Local Host® in Guayaquil, Ecuador

I was born, raised and educated in Guayaquil, Ecuador. I finished my education as an English teacher in Guayaquil, but I kept on studying as Tour Guide, graduated at the U.N.I.D.E.C. University from Riobamba and obtained my Tour Guide License. I worked with children as an English teacher in an elementary school from 1986 to 2012. Nineteen years ago I had the opportunity to work as a tour guide for the shore excursions provided to Norwegian Cruise Vista Fjord, and since then I discovered a wonderful job where I learned to know my country. Due to my high skills and responsibility I began to work as a tour guide. I love the Ecuadorian flora and fauna and I would like to be a specialized guide in bird watching in the near future. My great satisfaction as a tour guide has been incredible because I had the chance to meet people from other cultures and latitudes from around the world.

Cerro Santa Ana

The ascension to the top is a good little work out, although there are plenty of places to stop and rest along the way. Getting to the top, however, is well worth it. There’s a beautiful park at the top and views unlike anywhere in the city. Like the ugly duckling turned to swan tale, this once poor area was transformed into a prime tourist attraction – a 465-foot stairway flanked by colorful houses, eateries, gift shops and galleries. Bring water for the trip!

Parque Historico Guayaquil

This unique spot combines architecture, history, and wildlife. You can stroll around and view all the plaques that explain the buildings of this large museum, and then spend the afternoon with the animals in this well-kept facility with highly knowledgeable and friendly guides. Malecon 2000

If you only have time to take in just a little bit of Guayaquil, this little stretch is the perfect place to do it. It spans about a mile and a half along the coast and offers little drink spots, occasionally has entertainment, and you can see the variety of Guayaquil’s architecture along the way. With offshoots into various neighborhoods that you can scope out at your leisure, it’s a great starting point for exploring the city.

Parque de las Iguanas

For a strange and fun experience, head to the city square that hosts hundreds of Iguanas, smack dab in the middle of the city. With the hustle and bustle and a cathedral as your back drop, you can stroll around for an hour or two and watch these funny and fascinating creatures along with other wildlife in the square. Something you will remember always!

Churute Mangroves Ecological Reserve

About a half hour outside of Guayaquil, Churute is simply amazing and a great way to spend half a day. You’ll have the chance to glimpse some species of monkeys, sloths, horned screamers, parrots, roseate spoonbills, rails, herons and so much more! The locals harvest seasonal mangrove crabs, and occasionally they’ll prepare crab meat empanadas right on site! Make sure to bring your insect repellant or mosquitoes may spoil your visit.
