Cruising the Galápagos on board the Coral I/II – 7-Night cruise

11 Day Package from Quito to Guayaquil

Iguanas, and sea lions, and turtles, oh my! Where on earth can you find more rare species of plants and animals than people? The Galápagos Islands, of course! And when you cruise to this unique group of islands with Monograms, there is no stress, just fun! We take care of the hassles for you, from your hotel and cruise accommodations, to sightseeing and most meals. We even set you up with a Local Host® to help meet your needs during your stay, so that all you have to do is remember to pack your swimsuit!

Your vacation begins in Quito, where your Local Host will greet you and help acquaint you with the city. The next morning, after an included breakfast, you will head out on a private tour to explore the city, rich with history and marked by the legacy that the Incas and Spaniards left behind. See Independence Square, the cathedral, and San Francisco Plaza Church. Enjoy an afternoon of leisure before packing your bags and heading off to the Galápagos the next morning.

You will embark on a 7-night cruise around the gorgeous and one-of-a-kind Galápagos Islands. For this leg of your adventure, all of your meals are included. Begin your adventure at the Charles Darwin Research Station to see and learn about the Giant Tortoises native to these islands. You’ll also visit Bartolomé, where you can see a fascinating moonscape and take a hike to see the striking view of the surrounding islands; Rábida Island, where you will discover a rare red sand beach, home to colonies of marine iguanas, sea lions and several species of Darwin’s finches; Santa Cruz, where the clear, calm waters of Black Turtle cove offer the perfect place to see a colorful array of fish, rays and reef sharks; Isabela and Fernandia Islands where you can watch for flightless cormorants, penguins, and whales, and finally, Santiago Island, where you can explore tidal pools populated by fur seals and Sally Lightfoot Crabs. Throughout your cruise there will be multiple opportunities to snorkel in search of the diverse and colorful marine life found in the archipelago.

So grab your camera and say “Sayonara” to the stresses of planning your own vacation. With Monograms, your vacation package to the Galápagos Islands is as stress free and fabulous as you dreamed it would be!

FEATURED HIGHLIGHT

DAY
1
Arrive in Quito, Ecuador

Arrive in Quito, where you will be met by your Local Host.

DAY
2
Quito

Your included PRIVATE CITY TOUR showcases Independence Square, the cathedral, San Francisco Plaza Church, and the basilica with its marvelous stained-glass windows.

DAY
3
Quito–Baltra–Santa Cruz (Embarkation)

Fly to Baltra and transfer with your expert Naturalist to the CHARLES DARWIN RESEARCH STATION, where the Galápagos giant tortoise breeding program helps preserve the fragile Galápagos environment. Learn how eggs are brought from the nearby Galápagos Islands, incubated artificially until the galápaguitos (little turtles) are born and then at the age of 5 are returned to their native areas. Board your ship for your 7-night cruise.

DAY
4
Cruising: Santa Cruz & Bartolomé Islands

At DRAGON HILL on Santa Cruz Island, walk by a brackish lagoon where feeding flamingoes can occasionally be found. The trail leads to an important nesting ground for endemic land iguanas, and offers lovely views of the neighboring islands. The forest is home to mockingbirds, Darwin’s finches, yellow warblers, and Galápagos doves. After lunch, visit BARTOLOMÉ to discover a fascinating moonscape formed by volcanic parasitic cones. Hike to the summit for impressive views of the surrounding islands, including Pinnacle Rock. Bartolomé offers some of the best snorkeling, thanks to clear waters and abundant sea life, including sea turtles, white-tipped reef sharks, and maybe even Galápagos penguins.

DAY
5
Cruising: Rábida & Santiago Islands

On RÁBIDA ISLAND, see its red-colored beach, formed from the unusually high content of iron in the volcanic material. Here, your Naturalist points out large colonies of sea lions, marine iguanas, mockingbirds, yellow warblers, and several species of Darwin’s finches. This is a wonderful place to snorkel from the beach, due to the unique combination of underwater species and submarine landscapes. Later, explore Buccaneer Cove on SANTIAGO ISLAND and see the dramatic coastline inhabited by a large number of marine birds, sea lions, and intertidal organisms. At Espumilla Beach, walk through the mangroves and see salt-water lagoons that are home to wading birds like flamingos.

DAY
6
Cruising: Santa Cruz Island

Arrive at BLACK TURTLE COVE on the north shore of Santa Cruz Island, accessible only by sea, where turtles enjoy swimming in the calm waters along with colorful fish, rays, and small sharks. This cove has been declared a “Turtle Sanctuary,” and is home to sea birds, including pelicans, herons and egrets. EDEN ISLET offers opportunities to see Nazca and blue-footed boobies and reef sharks. Disembark at WHALE BAY on Santa Cruz in search of marine iguanas and seabirds, followed by time for snorkeling.

DAY
7
Cruising: Isabela & Fernandina Islands

Off the coast of ISABELA ISLAND, admire impressive geological formations, including a sheer cliff that is home to a diverse sea and coastal birds such as pelicans, Galápagos penguins, and flightless cormorants. There are whale-watching opportunities between May and December. Your afternoon visit of ESPINOSA POINT on Fernandina Island reveals the largest, most primitive-looking race of marine iguanas, mingling with sea lions, flightless cormorants, and Galápagos penguins.

DAY
8
Cruising: Isabela Island

At Urbina Bay, walk on a volcanic black beach in search of giant tortoises, land iguanas, and the flightless cormorant. At TAGUS COVE, learn about the eruption of the five volcanoes that formed Isabela Island. Take a trail to a saltwater crater lake for excellent views of lava fields and volcanic formations. A dinghy ride reveals marine wildlife, bluefooted boobies, brown noddies, and maybe Galápagos penguins.

DAY
9
Cruising: Santiago Island

Walk along a trail comprised of volcanic ash and basaltic rock at PUERTO EGAS to tidal pools populated by fur seals and Sally Lightfoot crabs. Snorkeling is a highlight, and marine wildlife includes lobster, starfish, marine iguanas, and octopus. A walk at SULLIVAN BAY features extensive Pahoehoe lava flows.

DAY
10
Cruising: Santa Cruz (Disembarkation)–Baltra–Guayaquil

Disembark on Santa Cruz Island and visit BACHAS BEACH, where you will find two flamingo ponds, iguanas sunbathing, and many coastal birds. This beach is also a main nesting site for sea turtles. You will find remains of barges that sank long ago, once the property of the United States Navy when they operated an air base on Baltra Island during World War II. Later, fly to Guayaquil.

DAY
11
Guayaquil

Your vacation ends with breakfast this morning.

Meet Ana Cecilia Cárdenas, one of your Local Hosts in Quito, EcuadorMonograms provides travelers access to a Local Host®, so you will have someone on hand to answer those vacation questions pertaining to Quito. No waiting in line at the concierge desk or trying to ask your waitress at breakfast directions to the shopping district. Simply ask your Local Host® about Quito and you'll be on your way in no time. Plus, your Local Host® will share local Quito insights and share suggestions for getting off the beaten path, leaving you more time to create lasting vacation memories that are yours alone.

Meet a Local Host®

I was born in Quito and lived here most of my life. I always liked to travel and that is why after finishing high school, I decided to study tourism administration. While I was studying at the University, I started to work as a tour guide and found it very interesting. Being a tour guide allows me to meet people from many different places and it took me to incredible places. For a period of time I moved to Argentina where I taught Spanish and English but I missed my family and country, so I decided to come back to Ecuador. When I came back to Quito, I worked as a Key Account Executive for a tour operator, which was a great experience for my career, but after a time, I decided to be a tour guide again. I realized I enjoy being with people outside in the nature more than working in an office, and I am able to have more time for other activities I like, such as painting and working with the children of my church.

Ortega P. & Hijos

Owning a “toquilla hat” means owning a piece of myth and legend. Visit this local outlet for renowned Cuenca hat manufacturer, Ortega and Sons, for the best hats hand-woven in Ecuador since 1899.

Parque El Ejido Arts & Crafts Market

Held every weekend, this market sells everything from handmade jewelry to carved wood. But it’s famous for its paintings depicting Quito’s city scenes. If you want a piece of art to remember your visit to Quito, this is the place to go.

Mercado de Santa Clara

For a true taste of Quito, visit the vegetable, herb, and flower stands of this colorful farmer’s market. You can even purchase a locally woven basket to carry home your loot.

La Querencia

Whether you sit inside by the fireplace or outside by the garden, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of Quito while savoring traditional Ecuadorian dishes like lamb stew and fried bananas.

La Ronda

This quiet street in one of Quito’s best-preserved sections winds around 18th-century stucco houses with brightly colored balconies. It offers the perfect spot for a leisurely stroll.

Plaza Santo Domingo

Locals venture to this charming square on the weekends to listen to storytellers and delight in jugglers and mimes.

Museo Fundación Guayasamin

Tucked in a residential area of Quito, this museum features the works of Oswaldo Guayasamin, one of Ecuador’s most famous and prolific modern artists.

La Reina Victoria

A British pub, La Reina Victoria, is practically the only place in Quito where you can get a draft beer. Enjoy a pint and a game of darts.

Café Libro

If you’d like to take home some Ecuadorian literature or photo books, this bookstore carries an extensive collection of books in both Spanish and English.

Plaza Fosch and Plaza El Quinde

Located in Av Fosch between Amazonas and Reina Victoria, you’ll discover lots of good restaurants and cocktail bars here. Sometimes concerts are held in the square.

Meet Lorena, a Local Host® in Guayaquil, Ecuador

I was born, raised and educated in Guayaquil, Ecuador. I finished my education as an English teacher in Guayaquil, but I kept on studying as Tour Guide, graduated at the U.N.I.D.E.C. University from Riobamba and obtained my Tour Guide License. I worked with children as an English teacher in an elementary school from 1986 to 2012. Nineteen years ago I had the opportunity to work as a tour guide for the shore excursions provided to Norwegian Cruise Vista Fjord, and since then I discovered a wonderful job where I learned to know my country. Due to my high skills and responsibility I began to work as a tour guide. I love the Ecuadorian flora and fauna and I would like to be a specialized guide in bird watching in the near future. My great satisfaction as a tour guide has been incredible because I had the chance to meet people from other cultures and latitudes from around the world.

Cerro Santa Ana

The ascension to the top is a good little work out, although there are plenty of places to stop and rest along the way. Getting to the top, however, is well worth it. There’s a beautiful park at the top and views unlike anywhere in the city. Like the ugly duckling turned to swan tale, this once poor area was transformed into a prime tourist attraction – a 465-foot stairway flanked by colorful houses, eateries, gift shops and galleries. Bring water for the trip!

Parque Historico Guayaquil

This unique spot combines architecture, history, and wildlife. You can stroll around and view all the plaques that explain the buildings of this large museum, and then spend the afternoon with the animals in this well-kept facility with highly knowledgeable and friendly guides. Make sure to get there early enough to see it all!

Malecon 2000

If you only have time to take in just a little bit of Guayaquil, this little stretch is the perfect place to do it. It spans about a mile and a half along the coast and offers little drink spots, occasionally has entertainment, and you can see the variety of Guayaquil’s architecture along the way. With offshoots into various neighborhoods that you can scope out at your leisure, it’s a great starting point for exploring the city.

Parque de las Iguanas

For a strange and fun experience, head to the city square that hosts hundreds of Iguanas, smack dab in the middle of the city. With the hustle and bustle and a cathedral as your back drop, you can stroll around for an hour or two and watch these funny and fascinating creatures along with other wildlife in the square. Something you will remember always!

Churute Mangroves Ecological Reserve

About a half hour outside of Guayaquil, Churute is simply amazing and a great way to spend half a day. You’ll have the chance to glimpse some species of monkeys, sloths, horned screamers, parrots, roseate spoonbills, rails, herons and so much more! The locals harvest seasonal mangrove crabs, and occasionally they’ll prepare crab meat empanadas right on site! Make sure to bring your insect repellant or mosquitoes may spoil your visit.
