Journey Down Under (IPO)

9 Day Package from Cairns to Sydney

This is Jeopardy! Answer: Astronauts can see this coral reef system from space. Question: What is the Great Barrier Reef? But have no fear! You don’t have to start training to become an astronaut to see the largest coral reef system in the world! Monograms has you covered with this 9-day vacation, where you not only get to see the Great Barrier Reef, but your journey will also take you to Australia’s Outback. We’ve arranged for you to have a Local Host®, someone who is there to answer questions, offer suggestions, and help make your vacation the trip of a lifetime. But that’s not all. We’ve also arranged your hotel reservations, daily breakfast, sightseeing, and transfers from/to your hotel to/from the airports for all intra-vacation flights, and visits to help you really understand life in Australia's Outback.

Your vacation begins the moment you arrive in Cairns. We can pick you up at the airport and whisk you to your selected hotel, where your Local Host will offer you a warm greeting and a set of materials to help you get settled and personalize your trip. The next morning, after your included breakfast, you'll cruise on a catamaran to the Outer Great Barrier Reef, one of the most amazing natural wonders on Earth! We've arranged for you to either snorkel or take a semi-submersible watercraft tour, or you can attend a presentation by a marine biologist. Regardless of what you choose, you’ll be amazed at the beauty all around you. A photo cannot capture it; you must experience it for yourself.

After a full day in Cairns to explore on your own (with the support of your Local Host, of course), you'll fly to the Outback, where you’ll see the sunrise at Uluru (Ayers Rock) and enjoy drinks & canapés while watching the sunset at Kata Tjuta (the Olgas). While in the Outback, we've also arranged for you to visit the Uluru-Kata Culural Centre with its amazing collection of Aboriginal arts.

Your final destination is Sydney, where we will have a Local Host waiting to welcome you to this bustling city. The next day, after your included breakfast, we’ll pick you up at your hotel for guided sightseeing with a local expert. Hear the insider stories around the must-see sights, such as the Opera House and Bondi Beach. A full day in Sydney gives you time to explore on your own or to take one of the many optional excursions we offer. Perhaps climb to the top of Sydney Harbour Bridge, shop for a favorite souvenir, or take an excursion to the Blue Mountains. Your Local Host will have plenty of suggestions.

Between the sightseeing we've included and the transportation we've arranged, including the catamaran to the Great Barrier Reef, and the time you save by letting us take care of the details, you’ll be one happy traveler!

Meet a Local Host® in Cairns

, Hi, I'm LIsa and I have traveled extensively and lived in every state and Territory of Australia prior to coming to work in the tourism industry in beautiful Far North Queensland. Over the last 23 years I have developed a passion for our gorgeous and diverse region. Helping visitors experience the best of Cairns is the most satisfying job in the world!!

Cairns Botanic Gardens

The lush tropical flora of Cairns can’t be beat and a trip to the Cairns Botanic Gardens invites you to explore the beauty of its tropical flowers, trees and ferns. Home to approximately 4,000 species of plants, you’ll want more than a day to capture it all, which can be easy to do, since admission is free. Buses run to the Botanic gardens from the Cairns city center, departing roughly every 25 minutes.

Wait-a-While Rainforest Tours

Many rainforest animals are nocturnal and difficult to spot during the day. If you’re a little nocturnal yourself, consider one of these tours designed to maximize wildlife encounters. They start at 3:00 pm and end around 11:00 pm.

Fishing Cairns

Cairns is the black marlin capital of the world. Whether you want to reel in one of these giant fish or try your skill against a barracuda or a tiger shark, this outfit can get you to the secret spots.

Cairns Esplanade

Get a taste of local life as well as a little exercise at this Cairns focal point. Go for a morning jog, join families flying kites, or take a swim in the lagoon.

Reef House Day Spa

Visit this spa in the Sebel Reef House Hotel for a little rejuvenation. The Kodo Body Massage—a rhythmic massage using ancient Aboriginal techniques—should do the trick.

Cairns Night Markets

These markets are somewhat of an institution, popular with both locals and visitors alike. Located on the Esplanade, they offer everything from souvenirs, home wares and gifts to tattoos, crocodile skins and pearls. They are open every night from 5pm and offer casual dining in a well-serviced food court.

Port Douglas

If you find yourself with a free day, Port Douglas, located an hour’s drive north of Cairns, is a lovely place to spend your time. Wander the shops and art galleries, see St Mary’s by the Sea wooden chapel, or enjoy a drink on the balcony of the Courthouse Hotel or in the uniquely Australian Ironbar.

Cairns Dinner Theatre

Mulgara Gallery

Located in the foyer of Sails in the Desert Hotel the gallery offers superb selection of Australian hand-crafted glassware, pottery, textiles, metal and leather work, featuring renowned artists.

Meet a Local Host® in Sydney

After working in Australian tourism for over 20 years, I feel privileged that I can give travelers an unforgettable experience visiting the beautiful harbour city of Sydney.

I love sharing my local knowledge, from it’s small (and interesting) beginings to the bustling city it has grown into.

Manly Beach

Catch the ferry from Circular Quay to this iconic Sydney beach. Stroll through the corso while enjoying an ice-cream or treat yourself to a beer at the Hotel Steyne overlooking the ocean. You may wish to walk along the beachfront to Little Manly Beach.

Walk across the Sydney Harbour Bridge

Enjoy spectacular views of Sydney Harbour and the city surrounds as you take an easy stroll across the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge and back.

Queen Victoria Building and Strand Arcade

These shopping arcades are both architectural beauties in their own right. Even if you aren’t interested in shopping, they are worth a glimpse.

Clifftop Coastal Walk

This walk hugs the coastline from Bondi to Coogee and is 6 kms in length. Walk all or part of it for amazing views and perhaps stop for a swim at one of the beaches along the way.

Altmann & Cherny Opal Store

Located on Pitt St. at Circular Quay, this family-owned and operated business offers an impressive range of opal jewelry.

Paddy’s Market

If you want to bring home inexpensive, kitschy souvenirs, this Chinatown market is the place. Kangaroo oven mitts and Opera House shot glasses abound. Note: Paddy's Market is not open on Monday's and Tuesday's.

Museum of Contemporary Art

Stroll the MCA and experience the work of today’s artists from across Australia and around the world on your own or take part in one of the free daily guided tours. Getting hungry? Stop at the MCA Cafe on Level 4 for spectacular harbor views, site-specific art and a fresh daily menu. On Wednesdays, make sure to check out their contemporary art after dark when the galleries, Cafe and Store are all open until 9pm.

Sydney Opera Bar

Found at the water’s edge of the Sydney Harbour and base of the famous Sydney Opera House, the Opera Bar promises an experience to remember. Toast to unforgettable views, new friends and new experiences in the afternoon sun.

Explore The Rocks

Get a sense of Sydney's past exploring The Rocks' cobbled laneways, cozy cafés and oldest pubs in the country. Major highlights within this area are: Sydney Observatory, Argyle Gallery, Cadman's Cottage, Sydney Theatre Company, Lord Nelson Brewery and The Rocks Markets where Sydneysiders flock to on Fridays and over the weekend.

Island hopping on Sydney Harbour

Sydney Harbour Islands Fort Denison, Shark, Clark, Rodd, Goat and Cockatoo are among some of Sydney's most popular natural attractions. Catch one of the regular ferry services from Circular Quay during summer and take in the sparkling scenery.

Thai Town

Thai Town, located in Haymarket on Campbell Street bordering Chinatown, is a neighborhood in Sydney with a Thai theme. While not as elaborate as Sydney's Chinatown, it has quickly become to best place to go in Sydney for great Thai Restaurants as well as Thai grocery stores.
