Meet a Local Host® in Lake Como

Hi everyone! My name is Luisa and I'll be very happy to welcome you as my guest at Lake Como! I have a Masters degree in Political Science & History and have been working in tourism for the past 20 years. I look forward to sharing my knowledge with you about the region's incredible history and art, as well as information about the marvellous lake and nearby picturesque villages. I am here to help you make your stay in Como a fantastic unforgettable adventure.

Silk has been part of Como’s existence for over 4,000 years, which takes us right back to the Middle Ages. Today Como provides silk for the fashion houses of Milan, Paris and New York, as well as Italy. You can buy beautiful gifts for your friends and family back home such as silk clothing, scarves, handkerchiefs, ties, upholstery, decorator fabrics and shawls.

Lake Como's aspiring silk makers still learn their trade in the Istituto Tecnico Industriale di Setificio textile technical school which is also home to the Museo della Seta. Early dyeing and printing equipment features amid displays that chart the entire fabric production process. Explanations start with the humble silkworm and how it is raised (no longer the case in Italy, which these days imports raw silk mainly from China) through the creation of bundles and reels of silk, and on to the dyeing and production of finished products.

The lake-side Volta Temple was built in 1927. It is dedicated to Como’s native son, physicist Alessandro Volta (1745-1827), inventor of the electrical battery. Life Electric is a contemporary sculpture, also dedicated to Mr. Volta. Completed in 2015 it is located on the very end of the Diga Foranea pier.

About 500m south of the city walls is the remarkable 11th-century Romanesque Basilica. Its high structure and impressive apse are decorated with a beautiful geometric relief around the outside windows, and the highlight is the extraordinary frescoes inside which depict scenes from the life of Christ. The frescoes were restored to their former glory in the 1990s. A university occupies what was once the cloister. To get a closer glimpse of the apse exterior, stroll into its grounds.

This monument to Italy's WWI fallen heroes is a classic example of fascist-era architecture and dates to 1931.

One of Como's most charming walks is the lakeside stroll west from Piazza Cavour. Passeggiata Lino Gelpi leads past the Monumento ai Caduti, past a series of mansions and villas, including Villa Saporiti and Villa Gallia , both now owned by the provincial government and closed to the public, before arriving at the garden-ringed Villa Olmo. The gardens of the Villa are open to the public.
