Meet one of your Local Hosts in SingaporeMeet a Local Host® in Singapore

I always believe that each visitor to Singapore has some preconceived impression of us albeit good or bad. The moment they step onto our soil, it is an opportunity for me to give them the most memorable experience by showcasing our places of history, our multi ethnic cultures, our developments and achievements and our aspirations for the future. People travel not only to have a good time, but more importantly, to learn and absorb ideas that made us successful.

Singapore Sling at Raffles Hotel

Stop at Long Bar at the Raffles, where the Singapore Sling was born sometime between 1910 and 1915. The original recipe was lost, so this traditional cocktail has been modified through the years. Today it includes gin, cherry brandy, Benedictine, grenadine, Cointreau, pineapple and lime juice, a dash of angostura bitters, and fruit to garnish. The dress code is relaxed, so women should wear a casual dress or skirt, and men should wear a sports shirt, slacks or Bermuda shorts, and appropriate footwear.

Lau Pat Sat

Housed in the largest Victorian cast-iron structure left in Southeast Asia, this once thriving market is now a popular food destination for Singaporean locals. Here you will find a vast array of Asian foods to fit any taste. At night, Boon Tat Street is closed to traffic, and the food stalls move to the street, where you can watch street musicians perform.

Orchard Road

This ultra-fashionable shopping area of Singapore is popular for both tourists and locals alike. From the latest fashions to intriguing antiques, it is the place to shop and people watch. If shopping is not your thing, the National Museum of Singapore is well worth a visit. Located on the east end where Orchard Road turns into Bras Basah Road, the museum uses a storytelling approach that allows you to choose your own path into the past. The events path outlines the events and characters important to Singapore’s history, and the personal path tells stories through the eyes of the man on the street.

Wala Wala

This laid-back bar is the perfect place to spend the night after a long day. Live music is featured nightly and more often than not, patrons find themselves singing back-up vocals on several pop classics. For dinner, they serve up some great western food including pizza and chicken wings.

Singapore Flyer

Discover Singapore on top of Asia's most iconic architectural and engineering marvel. From sunrise until sunset, experience the breathtaking views of Singapore and beyond from this giant observation wheel. See the magnificent Marina Bay, towering skyscrapers, tropical greenery, the bright lights, and non-stop action against the beautiful skies.

Chin Mee Chin Confectionery

With a décor and atmosphere reminiscent of a 1950s coffee shop, Chin Mee Chin, known as CMC, is a local favorite. As you enter, the smell of fresh coffee (roasted on site) and confections will bring a smile to your face. They offer a variety of baked goods—from Swiss rolls to cream puffs—but the real star is the Kaya toast. Kaya is a traditional jam made from eggs, sugar, and coconut milk. Stop by for a bite to eat and a cup of coffee served the old school way—in a cup and saucer—and you may never view coffee shops in the same light.

Makansutra Glutton Bay

Sample some of Singapore’s best foods at the Makansutra Glutton Bay. Try everything from satay and BBQ chicken wings, to chili crab, oyster omelet and fried carrot cake. Every hawker is handpicked by Makansutra.

Kampong Glam and Arab Street

Nothing in Singapore beats Arab Street for bazaar-style shopping with true ethnic character. The street itself is a riot of colorful textiles from all over Asia, sold at very low prices. Here you can browse through hole-in-the-wall shops; haggle to your heart's content and come away with the most delightful purchases at bargain prices. The little streets in this area form the historical focal point of Muslim life in Singapore.

Bangkok

The Blue Elephant

You may decide you can’t get enough of the delicious local flavors, and if that’s the case, spend half a day at The Blue Elephant to learn how to prepare authentic Thai at home. This cooking school takes you through the entire process—from shopping at a market to enjoying your dishes. While it’s somewhat more expensive than a half day of museums and lunch, the long-term benefits are immense.

Lumpini Park

Lumpini Park is an inner-city haven of peace, fresh air and greenery – inviting visitors to connect with nature or enjoy outdoor leisure activities. Named after the birthplace of the Lord Buddha in Nepal, the park is a shady oasis home to various flora and fauna including the eccentric water monitor lizard.

Pratunam-Phetchaburi

Grease the elbows and stretch the knees; it’s time for a hectic shopping experience. There’s something for everyone here—from the bargain-hunter to the clinically fashionable. Clothing, jewelry, crafts, and much more are on full display in this busy area. Make sure you venture behind the street-front vendors to Pratunam Market for international goods. Keep in mind, bargaining here is more about being friendly and respectful.

Apoteka Lux Bar

With an old school feel, the Apoteka Lux Bar is based on an outdated word for pharmacist and emulates a 19th century apothecary. Come for the live music or grab a spot at the patio for a nice place to curl up for a romantic night or meet some friends.

Go Sky High

Bangkok is blessed with several “Sky High” options where you can have dinner and/or drinks with a stunning view over the city. Check out the Octave Rooftop Lounge & Bar on the 45th floor of the Marriot Hotel Sukhumvit for a great sunset or romantic meal with the only 360 degree view of Bangkok. Be prepared to pay a little more but it’s worth it!

Thai massage

There are countless places offering traditional Thai massage in Bangkok. One of the best choices is the Thai Massage School at Wat Pho. Many of the local masseuse and masseurs were taught here, and you can get a 1-hour massage for $15 to $20 USD. You can also learn the techniques for yourself!

Ride a tuk-tuk

These small 3-wheeled vehicles are an interesting way to get around and should be tried by anyone traveling to Bangkok. Make sure to negotiate the fare before sitting down.

Siem Reap

Meet one of your Local Hosts in Siem Reap, CambodiaMonograms provides travelers access to a Local Host®, so you will have someone on hand to answer those vacation questions pertaining to Siem Reap. No waiting in line at the concierge desk or trying to ask your waitress at breakfast directions to the shopping district. Simply ask your Local Host® about Siem Reap and you'll be on your way in no time. Plus, your Local Host ®will share local Siem Reap insights and share suggestions for getting off the beaten path, leaving you more time to create lasting vacation memories that are yours alone.

Meet a Local Host®

Hi, I'm Bunrith. I was born in Siem Reap and spent all my time there until I graduated high school in 1993. My first job was with a hotel and later, in 1998, I became a guide. I have been a full-time guide since and enjoy showing guests my home city and the surrounds.

Psar Chaa

Located in the French Quarter of Siem Reap, Psar Chaa or “Old Market” is where locals come to shop for their everyday needs. As with many local markets, Psar Chaa is a great place to wander around and mix with the locals. It is also the best place to sample authentic Khmer food, which has much in common with Thai and Vietnamese cuisine. Rice is the main staple and is often served with pork or fish. Noodles are also popular, as is curry. But for the more adventurous, try the spiced frog, a very satisfying meal. You will also find plenty of shops catering to tourists with items like t-shirts, maps, books, and Buddha heads—all for much less than you would pay in a store. Be prepared to haggle!

Night Market

Distinctly different from Psar Chaa or “Old Market,” the colorful Night Market was created for tourists. Here you will find stalls selling every type of souvenir you can imagine. There is also a bar and a movie mall at one end. It is located close to the main street that is lined with restaurants and bars, so it makes for a good walk after dinner.

Miss Wong

Inspired by old Shanghai, this bar is one of Siem Reap’s newest additions. The cherry-red lantern that dangles from the doorway beckons passers-by. Inside, slip into one of the intimate leather booths for an Indochine Martini, a mixture of vodka, ginger cognac and fresh pineapple juice.

Angkor National Museum

The Angkor National Museum features eight chronologically ordered galleries where many Angkor-era artifacts are on display. Several multi-media presentations give an understanding about Angkor history and culture.

Theam’s House

Theam's House is the home of Cambodian artist and designer Lim Muy Theam. Set beside a tranquil environment, the handsome traditional wooden house with its lust tropical garden holds a unique private collection alongside products conceived and created on site. Works demonstrate traditional Khmer arts & craft with a personal touch of design and modernity.

The Khmer Ceramic & Fine Arts Centre

The Khmer Ceramic & Fine Arts Centre is dedicated to the renaissance and appreciation of lost Cambodian art, pottery, ceramics & tableware. Founded in 2006 its goal is to revive the skill and knowledge needed for this technically challenging and beautiful handcrafted art form. Find contemporary tableware, vases, and more inspired by Cambodian culture and environment, that are both functional and decorative.
